Who we are

The District of Columbia Public Health Association (DCPHA) is dedicated to protecting personal, public, and environmental health in Washington, D.C.

The District of Columbia Public Health Association is an affiliated association of the American Public Health Association (APHA). We have collaborated with APHA to grow stronger as organizations, to share expertise, influence, and resources, and to advocate for common priorities at the local, state and federal levels. APHA is the national voice of public health and champions the health of all people and all communities. It is the only organization that combines a 150-year perspective, a broad-based member community and the ability to influence federal policy to improve the public’s health. The DCPHA is committed to:

  • Protecting and promoting personal, public and environmental health.

  • Studying and attempt to resolve health problems.
  • Meeting and sharing knowledge and experience in order to achieve the organization’s goal.
  • Providing leadership in public health by initiating and supporting voluntary and governmental action to meet health needs or to remedy health problems.
  • Promoting continuing educational opportunities for public health and allied workers to help them acquire new or broader knowledge and develop skills to provide more effective health services.

        OPEN POSITIONS**

        President-Elect

        The President-Elect is in line to succeed the President of the DCPHA.  

        The President of the DCPHA serves as Chair of the Governing Council, or Board of Directors, and presides at all meetings of the Governing Council, and, in general, performs all such duties as are assigned by the Bylaws and the Governing Council as the chief management officer of the DCPHA.

         The President is required to be a member of the American Public Health Association. 

        Vice President

        The Vice President, in the absence of the President, shall preside at all meetings of the Board of Directors at which the Vice Chair shall be present.  In general, the Vice Chair shall perform all duties incident to the office of a vice chair of a corporation and such other duties as are from time to time assigned to the Vice Chair by the Board of Directors. The Vice President shall chair the Communications Committee and the Annual Conference Planning Committee. 

        Treasurer

        The Treasurer will keep the GC apprised of key financial events, trends, and concerns, and assessments of the organization’s fiscal health. The Treasurer is also responsible for the financial and tax accounting compliance activities and completing and ensuring the completion of required financial and tax reporting forms in a timely manner and making these forms available for the GC’s review and are submitted to appropriate regulatory and affiliated entities in a timely and proactive fashion.  

        *Nonmembers will be required to join the organization prior to being seated on the governing council.

        Public Policy/Advocacy: We plan to offer strong advocacy programs centered on assuring that public health voices are being heard. You can keep track of public health issues under consideration by the District of Columbia City Council. 

        Free Informational Sessions: The association keeps members in touch with each other and current issues through the association’s web site and email updates of emerging issues relevant to public health. Stay informed about public health and in a way that saves you time.
